Summary
Each year more than 1.5 million school-age children are identified as experiencing homelessness in school districts throughout our country. The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act defines homelessness in broad terms as anyone who lacks a fixed, regular and adequate night-time residence. Students experiencing homelessness have federally guaranteed rights that offer them immediate enrollment in school along with the right to school stability, transportation, resources and other supports. This session is designed for teachers, school staff and others who desire to understand the challenges and barriers families may encounter in the school setting and who are interested in supporting their students and families in obtaining their educational goals.
