There are many theories of development and an understanding of these theories helps providers plan appropriate learning experiences to encourage development. According to Erikson's Stages of Emotional Development, children in different age groups are learning to balance different needs and expectations. Children who successfully resolve those conflicts will become confident, happy adults, while others may develop lifelong problems. The care children receive in the first few years can have a terrific impact on the rest of their lives and child care providers must understand what children need in or to get a good start.
