Need an engaging way to teach science, history, literacy and art all in one lesson? Learn the ancient art of shadow puppetry! This unique art form appeals to younger and older students alike because it’s not your ordinary puppet play. It involves learning the science behind lights, colors, shadows and engineering a theater build. This activity is great for preschool students to grow narrative skills as well as shadow, light and color play or for older students teaching writing skills or learning history in a unique engaging way. A brief history about how shadow puppetry came to be as an important form of story telling and it’s cultural impact will be discussed. Ideas for building a theater with recycled boxes and materials to use for the screen, methods for simple to complicated articulated puppets and materials list will be given.
