Summary
Despite the widespread use of the term “curriculum” in the educational space, the question of “what is curriculum?” is not easy to answer. Ask ten different professionals in early childhood education what is curriculum, and you might get ten different answers that range from state/provincial learning standards to lesson planning and teaching strategies. The concept of curriculum has changed significantly over history to encompass all aspects of the learning process and the daily functioning of a center. The aim of this course is to explore the multi-faceted nature of curriculum, understand the process of creating and implementing a curriculum, and identify the qualities of an effective curriculum. Curriculum is the thread that ties program design with center values and learning outcomes with teaching strategies.
