Summary
The term “discipline” is often associated with punishment; and traditional approaches to discipline often focus on creating a negative association between the child and the inappropriate action. Conscious discipline or positive discipline, a social-emotional approach to teaching, considers discipline within the context of self-regulation and setting one’s mind to achieve a goal despite potential obstacles. Conscious discipline requires just as much intentional thought of adults as it does of children. Correcting behavior requires that the educator have control over their emotions and a comprehensive understanding of their actions. To encourage positive actions and relationships in children, it is essential for educators to model the same amount of discipline. Conscious discipline is a trauma-informed approach to teaching that aims to remove the fear and shame associated with punishment through teaching resiliency, mindfulness, and self-regulation.
