Summary
Emotions have the potential to organize or disrupt our daily functioning. The extent to which our emotions can overwhelm us is determined by the individual’s capacity to regulate their emotions. Emotion regulation includes the internal and external processes responsible for monitoring, evaluating, and modifying emotional reactions. To begin with, infants require the support of caregivers to co-regulate their emotions. Children then internalize these co-regulation efforts as they learn to self-regulate. A primary role of educators is to teach children how to understand their emotions and regulate them according to the situation. The aim of this course is to provide educators with the tools for cultivating emotion regulation in children and teaching appropriate coping strategies for the educational context.
