Summary
Honoring and empowering children’s rights in early childhood education is crucial in providing a healthy development in the first 5 years of life. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) was adopted in 1989 and is a legally binding international agreement setting out the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of every child. Central to this convention is that every child has basic fundamental rights. Understanding the UNCRC is the first step for educators in creating a rights-respecting classroom for children. It is the backbone for truly understanding how to create meaningful learning opportunities for children that will allow them to actively participate and safely share their own perspectives in the classroom.
