Summary
Humans are fundamentally a social species, meaning social development is crucial for healthy functioning. Social development refers to the ways children learn to interact with those around them and is directly related to cognitive, language, and emotional development. A child’s ability to interact with others in a healthy and positive way has immediate and long-lasting effects from feeling safe and secure as an infant to learning new words as a toddler to developing friendships as a child to successfully navigating school as an adolescent. By understanding how infants learn to differentiate themselves from others and how children predict the thoughts, feelings, and desires of another through a theory of mind, educators can engage in more effective teaching practices. The everyday experiences children have with educators are fundamental to a child’s developing social skill-set.
