Summary
‘Burnout’ is a term that was historically used to describe the side effects of heavy drug use, but in 1974 Herbert Freudenberger, the German American Psychologist changed the definition to include the gradual emotional depletion, loss of motivation, and reduced commitment at work as a result of being exhausted from the work environment. Burnout is a reality for most professionals because there are higher demands, budget cuts, and people struggling to separate work and home, so they are not getting the separation and stress release needed to maintain high work performance. As a supervisor, it is important to understand what burnout is, how to identify it in your staff/team, and how to help mitigate and prevent it for the health and wellbeing of your staff but also the quality of your program. While there are certain aspects of burnout that you cannot control, there are things you can control and implement that will increase job satisfaction, which will help mitigate burnout.
