Summary
Multicultural literature is just one tool that can be utilized to create culturally-centered nature programs and curriculum. Participants will first share memories of being outside and create collages from natural materials they forage, to collage their memories to build community. We will discuss as a large group how family stories and art can be tools for supporting culturally-centered curriculum. Next, participants, will learn about what and why culturally-centered curriculum is important and how it can be supported using multicultural literature through a brief lecture. Participants will also learn guidelines for selecting quality books. In small groups, participants will be given a few books to evaluate using the guideline and discuss why they do or do not meet the criteria.
