Summary
Developing partnerships with families is an important responsibility for early childhood educators. Educators know that families are a child’s first teacher, and a child’s learning and healthy development are contingent upon strong family-educator relationships. Each family and educator brings their own unique needs, beliefs, and values to the learning environment, and educators must learn to work collaboratively with families to develop learning goals that best support outcomes for each child. In this course, we will identify the qualities of strong family-educator relationships, specifically how to engage families using a strengths-based approach. We will also identify strategies that support strengthening home-school connections, as well as ways to engage families in reflective practice to support continued involvement and dialogue. Together, families and educators can nurture children’s social-emotional, physical, and intellectual growth.
