Summary
In this course, teachers will learn about the important emergent literacy skills of phonemic awareness, alphabet knowledge, and concepts of print, also known as print awareness and will be introduced to instructional routines they can use to teach these vital skills. These skills, along with oral language are essential and work together to ensure that children are successful readers when they are older. Teachers will also learn about the continued significance and benefits of phonological sensitivity and how they can embed these activities into their teaching day. Learners will also gain understanding of the gradual release method and the different instructional times of the day to teach these skills. Throughout the course, they will observe actual classrooms and see how teachers scaffold supports and monitor children’s progress during instruction.
