Summary
The pandemic that began in spring 2020 led to restrictions for everyone around the world, near immediately causing a disconnect from face-to-face relationships between people. The need to limit in-person contact led to an awareness suggesting that although some were coping reasonably well, others struggled emotionally, experiencing vicious cycles of increasing distress and in some cases trauma, exacerbated by previous difficulties at home or with their mental health. Effects of the pandemic are set against new concerns about mental health. This online course examines the consequences of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), extreme stress, and the pandemic restrictions. We define resilience and its role in healing, signs of trauma and ways to reduce its negative impact. Content will reveal the need to prioritize mental health for adults and the children they care for and love at home, and in structured academic programs.
