Summary
Early childhood educators play an important role in fostering foundational language skills in young children. Language allows us to understand, communicate, and be successful. Young children are learning to use language to express feelings, thoughts, and ideas as well as communicate with others. Early language development includes a child's ability to have and convey their own ideas (expressive language skills) as well as to understand the thoughts and ideas of others (receptive language skills). These early language skills set the stage for the development of crucial reading and writing skills that children need to be successful. A strong early childhood environment is one filled with language development opportunities and a teacher prepared to intentionally support vocabulary development.
